Wow, what a fantastic find! My friend and I have just returned from a 4 day bank holiday break at French Riding Holidays. The horses are so well looked after and content that it made the rides incredible - the best horse riding I have ever done in breathtaking scenary. The accommodation is lovely and the food delicious. Nothing beats returning to the chilled out house after a day of riding and drinking one...two...several glasses of rose by the pool! Thank you to the very friendly team for making our trip so much fun....hope to be back very soon! We miss it already....

The best riding I’ve ever done, the best curry I’ve eaten in France and the best honeymoon I’ve ever had!  As a novice and complete beginner we expected to be trotting around a ring but on the very first day we were trekking the tracks and even did a short canter across a field.  This holiday was a wedding present from our family and friends and they will be delighted that their money has been spent so well.

Thanks to all of you

Can I just say I had a fantastic time with you guys.  Felt at home immediately, all the horses I met were lovely, and I was especially privileged to be trusted to ride the young princess Tiffany (cheers Mad Kenny!!).

Riding was superb, food was great  and at times emotional :), gite like a second home, country side magnifique, everyone at FRH are proper troopers dont know where you all find the energy.  Ill definitely be back!!

But.

Note to self:  Next time put massive knickers in hand luggage

Note to FRH:  Can I have different company next time, all that laughing did my crows feet absolutely no good - Im still giggling to myself and it makes me look like a loon on the metro!

Just returned home from our second visit , and it was just as fantastic as our first.
Shame we couldn't stay for longer.

I'm torn between, wanting to tell everyone how relaxing this place is, and wanting to keep it secret.
Well, if you've made it this far and found this guestbook on their website, don't hesitate, just book your trip.

Derek, Anne, Louise, Emma, Celine and of course the horses, make a great team and run a superb show!

The hacking's the best we've ever done. So few other places can accommodate a 6 year old, but your expertise ensured she had a brilliant experience.

Nothing like coming 'home' to great home-cooked food and wine!

We'll definitely be back.

Dear Anne and Derek

This is just to reiterate my sincere gratitude for one of the most fantastic holidays I've ever had in my life!!

Julia and I had been talking about it, in the run up, since last Christmas and I think we'll be talking and reminiscing about it until next Christmas too!

We had a fantastic time and EVERYTHING was perfect.  The horses are so lovely, healthy & well looked after, there was the most wonderful countryside and exciting trails to explore, the accomodation was great - comfortable & clean with a warm and welcoming atmosphere and the food exceeded my expectations and was absolutely delicious!  All courses, every single meal time!

You're wonderful people and are great at what you do.    Tres, tres bien!!

Julia and I are now hooked so we hope to be included in your future 'return business' stats some day soon!!!  ;-)

Best wishes and lots of happiness to you both and special hugs to Louise and Emma too.

Dear All,

Thank you all for another great holiday.  Even having been twice before it exceeded expectations – the rally was a particular highlight (real rural French life).  Riding such a variety of horses was really good fun, they are all so responsive and a pleasure to ride.   Indiana has the makings of a real star (ok so I’m biased, he suited me down to the ground – I felt that we were learning together!) and Epi is just a darling.

Good to see Anne, Derek and Louise again and to meet Emma – everyone was so welcoming and helpful

I don't think i could ever thank Derek, Anne and Clare enough for such an amazing experience. They have given me back the pleasure of riding when i was just beginning to to think i should hang up my riding boots for good. They have given me so much more confidence than i ever imagined i would have again after a rather nasty, unfortunate accident some 11 years ago. The combination of truly amazing and trustworthy horses and the knowledge and experience of Derek, Anne and Clare culminated in something quite unique! I turned up on a Wednesday evening an very nervous rider unable to ride in open spaces and went home on the Sunday afternoon after experiencing some fabulous and extreme rides wanting more. My time there was certainly not long enough and i hope to go back again soon. Again a very big thank you and i wish them all the best for the future.

We recently spent 3 perfect days with Derek, Anne & Clare on our first riding holiday as beginners.

Everything was better than we imagined it would be - the food and drink was very good and plentiful, the company was fantastic, the Gite was clean,  comfortable and really cosy with a log fire in the evenings, but best of all was the horses (especially Epice and Kaj)and the great rides that Derek introduced us to, our confidence got a boost and we can't wait till its time when we can visit again.

Many thanks to all three of you, and hope to see you again one day.

I have just come back from my second great stay with Derek and Anne. As ever, the food and accomodation were brilliant, and the company marvellous.

Derek really tested me this time, and I have to admit I was quite dubious about one particular testing canter, but I had faith in the lovely Kaj, and Derek's judgement, and had a great ride. It was a great sense of achievement, given that last year I didn't want to canter at all!!

The horses all look very well, and the gorgeous Oracle, Epi and Kajoline looked after me perfectly

I can whole-heartedly recommend French Riding Holidays for all abilities of rider, and will certainly be returning again and again - if they'll have me!

I only came for a weekend and the only thing I regret about my time was that it was so short! I had a fantastic time - I am not the most confident of riders and yet I felt 100% safe and looked after by the guides and my horse. As someone who has come to riding as an adult and found it initially daunting it is refreshing to have it demystified and made so very enjoyable. I will be back and am in the process of convincing my husband that he must come as well :)

Cara and I had a fabulous time, the food was brilliant, home made and tasty, lots of wine if you wanted it. The horses were individual and each had a way of being ridden which Derek explained so you could enjoy the nature of the horse together with the beautiful countryside and amazing views. We had lovely t shirt weather and no rain so picked a great week. The accomodation was comfy but the hot showers and log fire helped any stiffness dissapear.
We want to go back next year and thanks Derek and Ann for making us welcome. Carrots and kisses to Nelson and Kajoline.......

This is what holidays are all about for us: we have really appreciated the chilled out lifestyle, the fantastic scenery, excellent riding which has catered for the expert in my wife and the novice in me, and of course the delicious and hearty home cooked meals – which have been spot on (in particular the “pastry dam’ was an innovation to remember). Thank you Derek, Anne and Louise for your good company, great humour and apparently effortless hospitality (although we know how much constant hard work goes on ‘behind the scenes)

Alice and I enjoyed our week at Mas de Clamouze unreservedly. To comment honestly, we have to repeat many previous posts, but that can't be helped. We found the people great- warm and welcoming and good company. The horses were as advertised-very fit, enthusiastic, forgiving where necessary and a joy to ride. They really do want to be chosen every morning. If they could stick their hands up and say "Take me! Take me!" you get the feeling they would. Whatever your standard when you arrive, I bet you learn something new about horses and about yourself before you leave. Even if it is only just how steep a slope a horse can get down if you keep out of it...I have to say something about the food- it was fantastic, every day of our week. And it is again, as advertised, all inclusive. You could leave your wallet at home. And what a beautiful, unspoiled part of France this is. I think it is the most enjoyable week's holiday either of us can remember. We would recommend it to anyone.

Dear Anne and Derek

Hope you are all well and still enjoying the wonderful weather.

Just a line or two to thank you so much for such a lovely time at Maz de Clamouze. You work so hard to make everyone’s visit so enjoyable. Everything exceeded expectations...the people,  horses, the riding, accommodation, scenery and  weather. The food was wonderful and I can’t believe I ate so well and so much and returned home a few pounds lighter.. brilliant!

Thank you Derek for restoring my confidence with the riding. I really appreciated that situations(e.g. sliding down a bank) were presented and handled in such a calm way that it just did not occur to me that I couldn’t  do it. I can see why people make return visits and I would love to book again and hope you will  continue to accept solo bookings. There are at least 10 horses I haven’t ridden yet!

Please give my best wishes and thanks to Hannah and Louise too.

Thanks again and kindest regards

My daughter and I have just returned from 5 days in August 2009 and are struggling to find the right words to describe our time there. It was undoubtedly our BEST holiday ever., however not so much a holiday as a magical and unique experience. If you can ride you will be richly rewarded with fun, fit horses on challenging rides in breathtaking countryside. Once out of the saddle we shared wonderful meals, (superbly crafted by Anne, Louise and Hannah)and stories with people we now call "friends". If your riding ability is limited you have to believe everything it says on the web site about Derek - he is extremely inspirational and his passion for horses knows no bounds. Put your trust in him and you will have an amazing time.I am certain of only one thing........ We will DEFINITELY return.... again and again and again.

Ps Derek - I haven't forgotten I owe you a soaking!!!

This last week has been a whole new experience for us.  It started as slightly anxious beginners with only a few hours in the saddle and ended as competent and confident riders on horses we would have struggled with at the start (Nelson, what a dude!).  The whole set up and all of you are just brilliant.  And now we have raced horses as well as motorbikes, but Emily isn't letting us forget she beat us both!  We will be back!!

Wed all like to thank Derek and Anne (plus Hannah and Georgie!) for an amazing week at Mas de Clamouze. I had no real experience of riding, and Gill wasnt convinced that she would even get on a horse, but by the end of the week we both felt thoroughly comfortable on our horses.
Lewys started as an absolute beginner, but after a couple of days was off with the more experienced riders. Angharad had ridden before, but now knows how to do it properly!
The company was excellent and the food wonderful (helped down by local wines!).
We wholeheartedly recommend French Riding Holidays to both beginners and experienced riders.
A return visit is definitely on the cards!

Our expectations were exceeded on every level. The horses we rode were all superb and very well cared for. Caris and I miss being with you and would definitely recommend FRH to anyone wanting a riding holiday in a breathtakingly beautiful, quiet location, with great and plentiful food, wine, company and laughs.
The accommodation is bright, clean and comfortable and the view from our bedroom of the village with the horses in the field opposite is a sight to behold. So is the scenery on the rides; it was all I could do to stop singing! (I cant sing, apparently).
Derek and Anne will do their best to give you the holiday you want, matching the horse to your ability and taking you out on rides which will thrill you if thats your bag or reassure you if thats what you need. Derek, the race in the big meadow was the BEST moment...
At the end of each full day, we were presented with platefuls of lovely fresh food, and lots of wine. Dereks onion bhajis (Le Bhaji) and Annes Bread n Butter pudding were the high culinary points for me; OK not typically French but what you want after a long day. French style cuisine is there though; I reckon it should be described as fusion food!
I feel privileged to have ridden such quality horses; Maluga was so fast and exciting, while Kajoline was reassuring and gentle. In between I had the pleasure of Mithral and Oracle, both beautiful and easy to ride. Caris wanted to take Kim home...
We hope to see you again very soon.

Thanks to you and your staff for a very enjoyable time.

We have just returned from a holiday with Anne and Derek and its hard to find anything to say that hasnt already been written here in the guest book.
It really is as amazing as everybody says. We were instantly made to feel like part of the family, Anne cooked us the best food we have ever tasted, with Doogie and Bertie providing exceptional entertainment on a daily basis!! Dereks horsemanship skills were truly unbelievable. He improved our riding technique more in a week, than we would have achieved in months back home. The horses are absolutely amazing (mythral and Komadoor especially),all with individual characters, to suit all abilities and desires. We cant wait to go back again and again and again!!
P.S Hope the finger is better Derek.xx

For anyone looking for the perect riding holiday, look no longer you have found it.

You want exiting rides? FRH have them.

You want breathtaking scenery ? FRH has it.

You want happy, surefooted horses with individual character ? FRH has them.

You are looking for comfortable accommadation good food & wine ? FRH provides !!

You are looking for fantastic hospitality and great company ? This is the place! So you may say that hundreds of other riding holidays offer the same things.

But FRH have a secret ingredient. Derek Parker. His love of and understanding of his horses is magic. His knowlege of the horses, the terrain, the weather etc is awesome. The way that he can instantly match a rider to a horse who will then have the confidence to do things never done on horseback

before !!

Derek is definately what makes FRH so special and after having been 6 times already I can't recommend it enough.

Thanks

Derek + Anne it ws FAB !!!!!

I needed a break from city life and decided to travel to Mas De Clamouze
alone for a 3 night stay in March. I was initially a little worried about
travelling alone but should not have been as I was immediately made to feel
welcome and part of the family by Derek and Anne as soon as I arrived. I for
the full 3 days through the beautiful french countryside stopping off one
day at a restaurant for a delicious 3 course meal (and a glass or two of
yummy wine!), then off again for the ride home! The horses are all lovely
and good natured, I especially wanted to take Kajoline home with me! she is
absolutely gorgeous! The views out to the valley are amazing. Unfortunately,
I was too early in the year to use the pool but am looking forward to coming
back in the warmer months to enjoy a bbq too! Although the weather I
experienced in March was beautiful not too hot but with glorious sunshine
all day.
I was nervous about hacking out at first but Derek made me feel really
confident in my riding after my first day of hacking and my nerves had
disappeared! - you cannot help but feel relaxed riding accross acres and
acres of unspoilt countryside, up and down mountain trails and through
rivers, this really is a magical place and I am really looking forward to
coming back.

Dear Ann and Derek

Just a quick thank you for another great trip and a quick insight for others
Contemplating a visit to FRH

If you love to ride great horses in fantastic country side and enjoy
exceptional company then this is the place for you, its as simple as that.

Derek and Anne are your hosts and they will do everything they can to ensure
that you have a wonderful experience. It doesn't matter what level of rider
you are they will devote plenty of time to you and will ensure that you have
the right horse.

Unlike some riding holidays you can have much as or as little to do with
preparing the horses as you like but it wont be long before you've bonded
with your favourite and are rushing down in the morning to tack up.

This holiday experience has consistently received rave reviews, check out
tripadvisor, for a number of reasons, obviously the horses and the riding,
the pool in the summer and the hot picnics in the winter but for me it is
because of Derek and Anne who not only make you feel welcome but part of the
family......... they are the icing on the cake and they will soon become
your friends.

Jane and I are lucky enough to have participated in a number of riding
holidays around the world but this is the only one that we keep returning
to, four times so far and have plans to return soon. Whether you go for a
week or a weekend I dare you not to return.

Steve and Jane

We just wanted to drop you a line to say thank you so much for a fantastic holiday, we both feel like our riding has improved enormously, it is such a beautiful area and your horses are lovely! We felt very well looked after and appreciate all the trouble that you both went to (Catherine says thanks in particular for extra lessons and vegetarian meals!).

We have just returned from a superb Christmas with Derek and Ann.  It is
difficult to know what to praise first, the hospitality, the riding, the
horses, the scenery?  All were excellent.  Being novice riders did not stop
us being encouraged right to the limits of our abilities, which was utterly
rewarding and exhilerating.  Once we had learnt to trust the horses, who are
very comfortable in this challenging terrain, and once Derek had confirmed
we knew how to stop them, we went as far and as fast as time and weather
permitted.  There is nothing more exhilerating than a canter through
beautiful woods.  There were many "Thelwell" moments, and you had to
remember to stop and take in the stunning views.  Oh, and there was the
hip-flask.  On our returns to the gite, Anne's cooking was plentiful and
excellent, and wine and beer flowed freely.  It did not feel like being on
holiday so much as staying with friends.  Want a relaxed Christmas away from
your day to day responsibilities?  French Riding Holidays are difficult to beat!  Thank you Derek and Ann.

I have visited French Riding Holidays three times and am happy to admit that the place is now thoroughly under my skin!
All that is written by other guests about great horses; fantastic hospitality; the excellent food and the wine is absolutely true.
The Aveyron is stunningly beautiful with a perfect climate. Daytime usually has a benign sun shining out of a deep blue sky; night-time has thousands of dazzling stars shining out of an ink-black sky.
It is one of the few places in Europe where you can ride for three hours without seeing a car. You ride through lush countryside, untouched woodland and deep river gorges. You then arrive at an ancient but immaculately preserved little town and turn the horses out to graze in a hotel playing field.
No one shows the slightest surprise that people should arrive on horseback for lunch. The lunch is typically, leisurely French and lasts for about two hours. After which, you saddle up and ride out of town, the only sound being the clatter of hooves on the traffic free road and an occasional “bonjour” from friendly locals.
The afternoon’s ride is equally enchanting, following a different route back to Mas de Clamouse.
The next day’s ride would be in another direction but equally thrilling, perhaps this time with a picnic lunch arranged.
I can’t wait to get back!

We arrived in a deluge and similarly we left in a deluge. Despite the inclement weather at either end of the holiday my daughter Harriet’s first words when she got in the car to return home were ‘Can we come back next year?’ As non riding parents - knowing next to nothing about horses - booking a riding holiday is always act of faith rather than an informed choice. We’ve taken Harriet (aged 12yrs) on a number of riding holidays in the past some more successful than others but this has to be the best to date. Ann, Jill and Louise were always so friendly and upbeat – nothing was too much trouble. They went out of their way to help with any request however small even when busy preparing delicious meals etc. It is hard to do justice to the enormous contribution Derek made to Harriet’s enjoyment of the holiday. He gave careful consideration when matching her riding skills with her mounts and as the week progressed we could see her confidence/enjoyment growing. Even at the end of a long day ride he still had the patience and enthusiasm to help her coax her horse over a few jumps. What more could you ask for?

Hope to see you all next year (Harriet’s got her heart set on taking her horse for a swim in the river)

Sarah, Trevor & Harriet

PS. Forgot to mention that we’re from Cambridge and stayed with Derek & Ann from 12th – 19th Aug 2008. Please include my e-mail address.

Thanks

To Derek, Ann, Jill & Louise

I'm back in Ireland and feeling like a new woman, thanks to your heady mix of sun, riding, kayaking, swimming, food and just the occasional drop of wine!  It was exactly the kind of break I needed, such a treat to be looked after so well, and with such warmth, hospitality and gentle good humour.  In these days of timetables, money-making & technology it's food for the soul to arrive somewhere where the weather, the horses & the guests dictate the pace. Best of luck for the summer season, I look forward to coming back and catching up next year sometime.

Thanks again

Dear Anne, Derek & Jill

Hi, I hope you and the horses are all well and that the weather with you is considerably better than the rain we have here!!

"I arrived at French Riding Holidays excitedly looking forward to my riding holiday but, I have to admit, with an awful lot of nerves.  As a more mature rider I think it could possibly be an age issue but, no doubt about it, the nerves had kicked in big time.  My first morning I was introduced to the very lovely Epice who, sensing the wooden passenger she had and realising I was shaking with nerves, looked after me beautifully.  She, along with the wonderful Pom Pom and Kajoline, were absolutely wonderful to me and took the best care of me.  Derek, Anne and Jill were so supportive and encouraging and I can honestly say that I achieved so much more than I thought I would, including cantering, popping a jump and most importantly, for a nervous rider like myself, feeling wonderfully relaxed and happy and yes, even confident, riding such lovely horses.  The food, the wine, the people, the scenery and the weather were all fantastic and I had a ball.  So if you are a nervous rider, and you've seen the website and are wondering whether this is the holiday for you - the answer is yes!!

It was quite simply the best riding holiday I've ever had and I cannot wait to come back and do it all again".

Howard and I have been taking riding holidays for the last 7 years (in Portugal, Spain, France, Scotland, and America) and when 2 of our favourite places closed last year (CDA in Portugal and Les Cypres de l’Etang in Provence) we wondered whether we could ever replace them. We looked on the net and settled on Derek’s organisation. We’re happy to endorse all the enthusiastic comments in the guest book. We’ve just returned from 8 days at Mas de Clamouze and found our holiday excellent value, with truly interesting riding on good, fit, well cared-for horses in wonderful countryside.
This was satisfyingly supported by good food and company plus efficient transfers to and from Mas de Clamouze, tailored to our particular needs.  The accommodation is clean, comfortable, and very conveniently placed close to the centre of action.
I would recommend French Riding Holidays, especially to others missing CDA or Les Cypres!

Well, where do we begin! This was the 2nd visit and again being novices to riding as never been on a horse since last time, but yet again our holiday was tailored to our experience and our requests, we went out for a hack five times and even managed to trot and canter (and we are not  natural horse riders believe me they had a lot of patience!).

The food at all times was fresh, home cooked and pretty amazing and each week the menu is planned out based on their guests likes and dislikes so vegetarian or meat eater you will be amazed with the quality (and quantity) of food.

Jill, Anne and Derek were as accommodating and as sociable as ever and again we left behind three very good friends, and of course there was all the horses and the doggies, all well loved animals with fabulous natures.

The pool and the surrounding area is a great place to relax in-between horse rides and walking in the beautiful French countryside.

We would not hesitate recommending this holiday to any riders ranging from novices to intermediates for the location, the people, the horses and not least the food which is all absolutely fantastic.

Thanks again, Jill, Anne and Derek (and of course Epice, Paloma, Kajoline, Bertie and Dougie).

Love Suzanne & Mick Greaves xx

Derek, Anne & Jill – you have all been fantastic hosts, thank you for a wonderful weekend! The horses, the dogs, the food, the company, the wine, the picnic, the setting and the scenery…it’s all been superb.  You have an incredible range of beautiful horses to be proud of; it’s been an absolute pleasure to ride them.

I notice that most writers to this guestbook say they will return - I’ve absolutely no doubt we will too!

We’d have no hesitation recommending French Riding Holidays – if you like horses, beginner or experienced rider…you will LOVE it!

The short version - this is quite, quite perfect and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.  The longer version – Derek, Anne and Jill are excellent hosts; Derek is awe-inspiring with horses (if I could be a fraction as good I'd be happy!), it was just great to simply watch and learn; Anne is a sight for sore eyes with the fantastic picnic already set out at lunchtime (I can't believe I ate so much!), great to ride out with on other days, and her Boys are beautiful; Jill has some great riding advice and I have enormous respect for her work with some of the horses she and Derek are bringing on.

All this, and riding out in the wonderful countryside and woodlands for hours everyday.  I just cannot fault it.  And, if you ever find yourself on the Spice Girls Limbo ride, Jill will tell you the story (well done Aisling!!).  I will be back, I cannot think of a single reason why I would not.

As complete beginners my wife and I decided that learning to ride would be a perfect adventure for our honeymoon! We could not have chosen a better place to visit. Derek, Ann & Jill were superb company, thoughtful, skilled, fun and just the best hosts we could have ever hoped for! The horses were all amazing, well cared for and seemed utterly happy! Oh and the scenery was stunningly beautiful!

The truth of the matter is that before I went on this holiday I was scared of horses! I had only ever been on one previously and it absolutely terrified me. The reason I mention this is because a miracle happened while on holiday. Not only have I overcome my fear of horses I am now completely and utterly sold on riding. We class everyone involved in our holiday as miracle workers.

Within 3 and a half days, with no previous experience whatsoever, we were taught how to walk, sitting trot, rising trot, canter and (for a very short time) gallop! My knowledge of the equine world is limited but I feel that to learn so much in such a short space of time really is a huge achievement not only for myself and wife but for Derek, Maureen and Jill. They made learning to ride was so much fun it didn't seem like hard work at all.

I would recommend French Riding Holidays to anyone .. I have already! Both myself and my partner had the most fantastic time and it was an experience neither of us will ever forget. The best recommendation I can give you is that we didn't want to leave and we want to go back as soon as possible!

Wow! Wow! Wow!  We had a fantastic time, the whole package is wonderful.  The food is first class home cooked food, four and five courses, all freshly made with quality ingredients, very tasty indeed and the wine is also excellent and flows throughout the meal.  The riding is excellent, this was the first riding holiday my husband and I had been on, neither of us had ever ridden a horse before but felt very safe in the experienced hands of Jill, Derek and Anne, there are some fabulous sites to see on horseback and they can show you them all.  The horses are absolutely beautiful and they are obviously all well looked after and loved dearly as this reflects in the good nature and patience of the horses. The surrounding area is so beautiful and peaceful you immediately relax straight in to the country life and the French people in the area are so friendly, everyone wishes you 'bonjour' with a nod and a smile.

We cannot recommend French Riding Holidays enough, your comfort and enjoyment is their prime concern and whether you are a novice rider or an experienced rider you will thoroughly enjoy a holiday with French Riding Holidays.   We are definitely booking again for next year and sincerely thank Derek, Ann and Jill for being such wonderfully kind people running a first class business.

For somebody who has spent years plodding on the only few miles of bridleway available near home [walk & trot only!], the Aveyron was a revelation. With seemingly endless off road riding on deserted bridle paths, this was another world. The roads, when you have to use them, are very quiet. Every village you pass through is so quiet and unspoilt it is like travelling back in time. Everyone who rides should go to French Riding Holidays. Would I go back? Yes please!

It is very rare that I am lost for words!! BUT I know that I will find it very hard to express just how much I have enjoyed both of my holidays in Asprieres. Having read all of the messages from other guests there is no need to stress just how great the scenery, accommodation, food, wine and weather are - all amazing!! And as for Derek and those horses they now all feel like part of the family! As a very inexperienced rider I expected to feel the need for another holiday to recover from full days in the saddle, but it turns out that with the help of long lunches and the chance to chill around the pool the mixture of relaxation and exhilarating canters is just perfect! Until now i hadnt returned to a holiday destination - the world is a big place to try and see it all, but there will be more French Riding Holidays to come - see you soon 'Uncle' Derek!

I have just returned from 3 months working with Derek for French Riding Holidays and would like to thank Derek for giving me the opportunity of working in such a fantastic place with wonderful horses - Derek, it has been a pleasure. The Aveyron is a very special place with the most amazing scenery and Derek really does have the perfect setting for his holidays. The horses are fit, well schooled and know their job - I know I have ridden all bar one! Dereks love for his horses and his job, are obvious and he has a natural skill of matching people with horses and choosing the best rides to suit different people. I would not hesitate to recommend this holiday to everyone, it is fantastic value for money! If you are a novice what better way to improve your riding and if you are an experienced rider you will get exciting rides on fantastic horses. I am definitely planning on returning! Having owned and run a riding establishment many years ago in Cornwall and enjoyed competing with my own horses, it was a new experience for me to go away for a riding holiday. I must admit to having felt a bit apprehensive about riding new (to me) fit horses over unknown terrain but was put at ease immediately by Derek who has a wonderful intuition for matching horses to riders. At the end of a week's holiday I felt I had known Derek and Jill for ever and couldn't wait to return. So - in June of this year, I again enjoyed a superb week with some excellent gallops in the company of Derek who could not have been kinder or more considerate in paying attention to the needs of the rider. The horses were responsive and happy. What more could one want - delicious food (and wine!), exceptional horses and the company and hospitality. I thank you both and hope to return next year.

Surreal Experiences

We have just got back from the most amazing and brilliant holiday ever. Our heartfelt thanks go out to Derek, Jill and Catherine for making it such a fun filled week. In Derek's capable hands we novices did things we have never experienced before and will always treasure. From being very nervous on day one both Harry and me soon relaxed and were more than willing to put our trust in Derek and the wonderful horses he chose for us. To see the bond between Derek and his horses, the love and care he shows them and also the genuine concern he has for his guests and their needs was awesome. Our thanks for the sumptuous picnics, I must try and get some of those wine carafes here in England, they just never seem to run out no matter how much you drink! We can't remember the last time we laughed so much, Jilly you really should be on the stage you are a born entertainer. We have got such wonderful memories that we really will treasure forever. We have already decided on the plane home that we cannot possibly wait until next year before coming back and are looking to get back in the next couple of months. Thank you all so very very much, there is not one single thing we would change about the holiday, not one.

Lots of love Anne, Nicky and Harry

Well. I've been back from my holiday for a few weeks now and have come down to earth sufficiently to put finger to laptop so that I may say a huge ‘THANK YOU!’ to Derek, Catherine, Chris and Rebecca (always on hand with a glass of wine at the end of day), and last, but by no means least the most beautifully responsive and endearing horses I have encountered in my relatively short time as a novice horse rider. Within 5 minutes of meeting Derek I just knew that we were in for a great holiday. After spending time riding out with him through the most stunning Springtime scenery it took no time at all to realise that he understands more about horses, and people on horses, than most of us understand about ourselves. He very quickly sensed our limits, and challenged us sufficiently without ever making us feel as if we were out of our depth. He also has an amazing knack of sussing our character and then matching you literally with your horse equivalent, for me it felt like Kenny was the left shoe and I was the right. Every day was eventful – we often laughed till we cried, we ate like Kings with the most amazing picnics, and whilst soaking up the beautiful views our skills and confidence developed by the hour, and every night was just what was needed in Chris & Rebecca’s beautiful house by the river. Great hosts, fantastic food, and plenty of chat and laughs again about the experiences that day had provided. Thanks guys, we had such a lovely time with you we almost forget we’d come for the horses! Derek – I’m coming back in October for my birthday, I can’t wait and will literally be counting the days down. I promise to switch my mobile off whilst in the river this time, and thanks again for the most amazing holiday ever.

This is to record my great appreciation for the kindness, care and hospitality shown to me by Derek Parker during my stay in the Aveyron. The area in Spring is very beautiful with steep valleys, sharp hills and miles of riding trails. We met almost nobody and no other horses on the four days that we were out. I rode four different horses, all were very fit and well able to handle 25 miles daily if asked. They were no slouches! There was no hesitation at water, steep slopes or rocky paths. All were totally unfazed by dogs or any other animals. There is as much or as little riding as anyone could wish to do. All together a brilliant break!

Well, was I lucky? I booked my holiday via the internet having looked at dozens of riding holidays in different countries. Chose French Riding Holidays simply because I like France and they weren't pushy! I have just returned from one of the best holidays I have ever had. I had been having lessons for 12 months but had had 2 bad falls, one very recently, so I was a nervous rider to say the least. Keen, but very, very nervous. Within minutes of meeting Derek I trusted him totally. To see his love of his superb horses and to witness his ability to understand the riders fears , needs and abilities was very reassuring for me. Thanks for your patience Derek. It was a pleasure to be with Derek and his gorgeous horses, their friends and their animals. 10/10 for the horses, the riding, the scenery, the excitement, the fun, the picnics and the accommodation. A big thank you to Chris and Rebecca for the beautiful room with a view, and for the delicious food. Loved every moment, especially the riding and will be back for more this year!! Thanks guys.

A fantastic horsey holiday. Many thanks to Derek for a fantastic week. The countryside is just gorgeous and we rode for miles each day without seeing hardly any people let alone cars. My horse, a beautiful ex-racehorse named Rembuchet was exactly what I hoped, fit and happy, responsive, keen oh and very very fast when asked! I can’t wait to ride him again when we come back, because we definitely will. My partner Phil, not having ridden for long, was looking for a horse that would be fun but safe and Derek again chose him the perfect mount in Kajoline,

Phil didn’t want to give her up and by the end of the week was extremely proud to have jumped 2 ditches and 1 log – not bad for a near beginner! Beautifully cared for, keen and happy horses; gorgeous food; plenty of alcohol and good humour and countryside that ranged from woodlands, tracks and open fields perfect for galloping. A great holiday.

....and I returned!!!

Well, I have just returned from my second holiday with Derek and co. and when I thought it couldn't possibly get any better, it did! Since March, a couple of fantastic new horses have joined the herd, providing an even bigger choice of characters to suit every ability. This time round I enjoyed the company of some other great like-minded guests ('hi' Martha, Carol and Mick!), with rides to fully cater for riders and non-riders, plus varying arrival dates, with rides tailored to the weather, rider abilities/preferences and the horses.....what organisation! I must say this holiday certainly provided me with the 'personal-touch' only a family run establishment can, you'll love it!! Thanks again to Derek and Catherine for making my holiday so fantastic; having already counted up my remaining annual leave, I'll definitely be back!

Unforgettable Experience! If you want routine, stereotype, and bland - this holiday is not for you. If you want to laugh a lot, enjoy stunning scenery, be gently challenged, treated like guests not paying tourists, and meet some fantastic horses, eat and drink like royalty - then this is for you. Derek is uncanny in being able to assess your ability and match you with the right steed (be as honest as you dare about your ability - it helps fantastically).

We rode as a family - each of us is of different ability (with Dad bringing up the rear) - yet Derek in the same rides provided something for all of us whilst we had a family experience. We all felt challenged although never once out of our depth. If you want bland, routine food then again problems are in store - we ate sumptuous meals, drank fine wines (well you do have to replenish after all that riding) - generally treated fantastically. The horses were golden - Georgie fell in love with Igloo who was safe but fun, Joser made Dad look like a star, and Stella whilst rock-solid showed her personality. These horses were perfect for us - but what ever ability, Derek can provide you with the best horse for your ability and personality. Also, we witnessed the care and attention that Derek et al lavish on their horses - they are far more than tools of the trade. The only diagreement we have is when to go back. 10 out of 10.

Bev, John and Georgie (see you soon)

Horse riding in the Aveyron What a truly fantastic experience this was for me. My partner and I are not very experienced horse riders, but decided to experience the Aveyron on horseback as we have just bought a house in the region. From the moment we met Derek, he made us feel totally welcome. The horses Derek chose for us to ride were perfect, patient steeds and the helpful tips on riding had me instantly feeling confident and fully able to enjoy this great experience. The Aveyron is a beautiful region of France - and just has to seen in this way. After riding for a couple of hours we arrived at the banks of the river Aveyron, only to be greeted by Dereks wife Di, offering us a welcome glass of the local wine and inviting us to eat a lunch which can only be described as a "bloody amazing buffet" (pardon my French). What timing! I was hot, hungry and a tad saddle sore! After we'd all had our fill - horses and all...We were raring to be off again. That afternoon I galloped....in the Aveyron....with the sun on my back....and a really big smile on my face. It was a day never to forget. In fact we have been back several times for more...

Thanks guys...You'll see me again really, really soon!

We would like to let everyone know who may be interested in a riding holiday, that it was a wonderful and fantastic experience, even though we have horses ourselves, we never realised how much you could see and do on horse-back. The scenery was beautiful and the hospitality of Derek and friends was second to none. It has also built my confidence in trusting the ability of what horses can do, after having a serious accident on my own horse and loosing a lot of my confidence. I am now 100% more confident now and I am out riding as much as possible. My horse is not impressed even though I am!

We WILL be back!! P.S You will love it!

This holiday met with all our expectations and more besides. The Aveyron is a truly exhilarating riding experience and was complimented by good, sound horses and hospitality second to none. Though regular riders ourselves, this was a whole new riding adventure, one that we will never forget. Many Thanks to Derek and friends, we look forward to riding with you again in the not too distant future.
